New National Guard Building Groundbreaking Ceremony
October 2009
Naval Air Station Atlanta formally became the General Lucius D. Clay National Guard Center on Saturday, September 26th, during a ceremony transferring ownership from the Navy to the Georgia National Guard. The Guard facility was named after Gen. Lucius Clay, a Cobb native who served in World War II and commanded the Berlin Airlift. As part of the ceremony, a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter flew by and a ceremonial cannon fire was conducted.
After the transfer ceremony, a groundbreaking ceremony took place on the future site of the new 220,000-square-feet Joint Force Headquarters for the Guard. Once completed, the building will house the Army National Guard, Air National Guard and Georgia State Department of Defense functions.
