Aviation - DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, MAINTENANCE BAYS UPGRADE
DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE Project Overview
The Maintenance Hangar Renovation at Dobbins Air Reserve Base was an 18 month design/build renovation of a 60,000 sqft 1942 aircraft hangar. The project was affectionately referred to by the project team as "The Extreme Hangar Makeover."
Originally constructed by the US Department of War as part of the war effort, materials used were rationed and construction methods were different. Consequently every structural member in the building had to be verified and recalculated to insure new additions to the three bay steel airplane hangar would stand up to today's rigorous standards. All of the structural components were riveted together and painted with lead based paint. In order to support the addition of a 5 ton bridge crane while cutting the center out of two roof trusses, all of the original rivets were removed and replaced with high strength bolts.
